This was a relative disappointment, not with the transfer, but rather with the performance itself. Any Das Lied is only as strong as soloists, and here this performance suffers in comparison with others. Hafliger fights a valiant but losing battle against the orchestra, and, well, response to voices in a subjective business, but Miller's warbling just didn't do it for me. This is a shame, as Walter's conception of the work is second to none.
Mahler plus Walter plus lovely recording!! Nothing more to say- Walter was one of the greatest conductors of the 20th Century.
HDTT's pure DSD 128 is the absolute best release of B. Walter 1960 Das Lied von der Erde with incredible details & musicality! I would hope they can also release the Klemperer-Ludwig, the Reiner-Forester or the Walter-Ferrier...I would buy any of these immediately again in DSF128....Bravo for another superb release!
