Superb recording of Kondrashin. I have known this recording for many years, which is good by normal Melodiya standards, but never like this. Beautifully clear and atmospheric. If only HDTT could produce more Kondrashin Shostakovich. Would love to hear the eighth symphony in particular, the recording quality of which has always been rather poor whereas the performance is, IMHO, one of the very best. Ditto 4, 11, 13 and 14.
Essential Shostakovich by Kondrashin.
I'm stunned by the resolution of this '60s Soviet recording. It's a revelation and I can't wait to try more offerings. Highly recommended.
Shostakovich: Execution Of Stepan Razin & Symphony No. 9
The cantata "Stepan Razin" has never received the praise it deserves, and this Ninth Symphony was its original Melodiya pairing. Kondrashin pushes hard, and rightly so. This first recording remains The One, but it hasn't reached CD except for a set of the complete symphonies, making the HDTT release essential. I haven't heard the previous incarnations, but the sound here leaves one shaken and stirred.
Kondrashin is unbeatable in this repertoire
I discovered High Definition Tape Transfers through reading a glowing review of this release in the DSCH Journal, dedicated to the life and work of Shostakovich. I knew Kondrashin’s classic recording of the Ninth from a 10-CD set of his recordings of the Symphonies released by BMG, but had never heard this white-hot performance of Stepin Razin before. The sound on the CD’s was an improvement over original Melodiya records I have heard, but this transfer eclipses those: it has more presence and impact, while retaining the clarity of the original CD. Highly recommended, along with HDTT’s companion album of the 5th/Gadfly Suite. (Version reviewed: 192/24 download).
Excellent Transfer of amazing piece
As anyone familiar with Melodiya, most of their recordings from the ’50s and ‘60s even when pressed by EMI/Angel, while having wonderful performances, left a lot to be desired sonically. Never fear, although still not quite up to mid-60s standards, this transfer sounds superb with excellent extended highs, good dynamic range, and very little distortion. Although the Symphony 9 performance is quite fine, it is the "Execution of Stepan Razin" here that is the star. If you love Shostakovich, then you need to hear this amazing piece and this is the performance and transfer you want.
