Bernstein's Rhenish Symphony is a high point from his years in New York, and one of the finest performances the work has received on disc. The sound is more vivid and present than it was on CD. One star deducted as a tax for the avarice of charging (very!) full price for the single symphony.
This performance was recommended to me. I generally like Bernstein's performances, particularly his earlier interpretations. I find many of his later recordings lack the freshness and spontaneity of his earlier years. To me this has a bit of a "choppy" start but settles down into a very satisfying performance. The transfer is very good.
