This is what I would best describe as a fine albeit 'standard', even slightly restrained reading. The HDTT sound is of course beautifully balanced, though the choir is perhaps a smidge 'burnt' and brittle in the tone of the more extreme fortes. For me, the ultimate recording is the live De Sabata radio broadcast from 1941. It is taut in the extreme, emotionally blood-curdling, with a scorching intensity that reaches the very heights this colossal masterpiece truly deserves. However, not having that in the HDTT catalogues, this Kertész recording is still a good buy, but for me, still only 3 stars. Enjoyable though it is, if you are already well acquainted with Mozart's Requiem, you will not find anything new or unique that might make it shine above other performances. Gil Sullivan
