Leonard Pennario Plays Grieg: Piano Concerto in a Minor, Op. 16 & Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43
I had not heard either of these pieces for decades so I am not familiar with other performances. My view is that both pieces are well performed by Pennario and the LA Philharmonic - with the brass passages very nicely done. From a technical perspective, compared to the other HDTT recordings I have, this one was very good in the one area that is sometimes not up to snuff, transferred tape noise. It was not noticeable anywhere at the sound levels I listed to. I had all the other qualities I like in terms of what some call ‘musicality’. The only reason this is not 5 stars is that both pieces are a bit ‘modern’ for me. Another person could reasonably rate this recording higher.
Pennario at his best.
Absolutely stunning interpretation and performance by Pennario and Leinsdorf. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was at their height in the 50s and 60s, and these recordings are definitely no exception. Without a doubt the best 'Rhapsody' ever recorded. Excellent transfer by HDTT!
