Pretty incredible that they are able to pack a high quality DAC, an incredibly powerful headphone amplifier, and all those features into a portable device. A big step up from the Dragonfly Cobalt that I was using before. Very detailed, open sound. Have enjoyed it with a variety of headphones, from sensitive Shure IEMs to power-hungry Abyss Dianas. Does take a while to find the optimal settings given all of the combinations, but have generally found the "normal" setting was more than enough power for 95% of listening even on the most demanding headphones. My one complaint is that the input is a UBS-A "male" jack instead of a USB-B female input like most DACs or even a normal USB-A female input, requiring you to use either a USB-A female to USB-A male cable (plus a USB-C or lightning adaptor to connect to a phone or ipad) or a UBS-A to USB-B adapter (both of which are included in the box, but it makes the setup a little clunky).
This is a quick comparison review of the ifi xDSD and Macro iDSD Black Label. I purchased both DACs from HDTT. Here is a summary of my experience after two weeks of extensive listening. The xDSD has tighter bass and more detail than the Macro iDSD BL. The bass of xDSD is very deep and clean. The bass of Macro iDSD BL is punchier. The Macro iDSD BL has more power and should be able to drive any headphones. The xDSD may have problem driving some hard-to-drive cans. I use them for different applications and love them both.
You get inundated with reviews about high resolution 64, 128, 256, etc. Now, that I have the micro iDSD BL products I feel free to download music in any format and being able to play it back thru my music system. After downloading my first 256dsd record I am very pleased with the details specially the separation of instruments. You can pinpoint any instrument in the orchestra and follow it. Very please with the purchase.
After a week or two of burn in the IFI micro iDSD Black Label is simply in a class by itself. Upsampling Redbook, high resolution PCM or DSD to DSD512 via HQplayer takes the music to an unrivaled level of analog-like quality. Playing DSD512 the IFI competes with DACs 10x its price besting the vast majority of DACSs that are capped out at DSD256. I now own two Black Labels, both bought from Bob W. Great service and immediate shipping and free downloads!
