great recording, fabulous orchestrations.
As a Debussy and Ravel fan I just had to have this one... and I was not disappointed. Beautiful music recorded very well.
which make me deeply immersed in music.
Flute, harp and viola pose obvious balance issues, both for performance and recording. I am pleased to say these are met with aplomb here. The result is a lovely chamber concert for these unusual forces, with the highlight being the sensuous Ravel Introduction and Allegro.
The sound is truly distinguished. There is an impressive amount of air around the instruments. It's almost uncanny how they seem to hover in space between your loudspeakers, or at least between mine. I rarely hear that degree of air and bloom, so it must be the recording. Kudos, Bob! The performance is also exceptional. It's really committed, with no trace of "we're playing a potboiler, groan" or of “mailing it in" for any other reason. Such excellent interpretations of all three works in such outstanding sound really demand to be heard. I was surprised to learn that the Ravel piece is ranked fairly low in his output, not least by the man himself. Its standing was I think greatly boosted when PBS' Masterpiece Theater used it as the theme music for "The Golden Bowl" (a magnificent British TV dramatization of the Henry James novel) about 25 years ago. It fit the Henry James "fin de siècle -- late in the day" sensibility perfectly. And this interpretation is the most satisfying of those I have heard on record. The harp playing is especially fetching. BTW the Debussy is excellent light summer music, and the Bax is sufficiently deep and meaningful to satisfy listeners who want that kind of chamber music. So something for everybody. Especially everybody who loves great music in great sound. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because this is so-called light classical music. Just trying to be rigorous, folks.
