Another Stokie's valuable recording, I have a few different releases CDs of this recording, this tape transfer still has its edge. But this tape (or maybe the recording's) sound doens't have the same clarity as some other stokie's finest recordings, and HDTT always keeps an album as short as 40 min or below recent years.
Stokowski's version of La Mer was originally recorded using Decca's Phase 4 techniques to most brilliant effect. Some ears might find the the balance artificial, but the impact is breathtaking in its vividness and brilliance. The playing has wonderful intensity. Like Ansermet and Karajan, Stokowski adds the extra brass parts in the last movement which are authentic. One of the finest performances of La Mer still available coupled here with an equally rich version of the Second Suite from ravel's Daphnis et Chloé.
