I have given this 5 stars not because it has the most brilliant tunes that only certain albums of any genre can attain but because of the overall experience it presents. I have a couple of other Tjader CD's that are live performances that certainly differ in pace from this album but fit a different mood. The more upbeat numbers do not have the energy level of most of Cal's live performances that I have but that is fine if you play this when the mood is right. Personally, the slightly lower tempo allowed me to appreciate the musicianship of the players better. The recording is better than any of my other Tjader discs by a fair margin though I do not have this in any other format for a direct comparison. The recording really allows one to appreciate all of the musicians as they are not muddled together at all and the vibes and organ come through better than many recordings of this or any other era.
Magnificent release. With DSD256 release I was simply amazed! Extra dynamic depth compared to the normal DSD64, extra clarity - sonics all 'n all huge improvement! The DSD256 release gives almost the reality as if you were there and listen to the orchestra. A must buy for your classic collection.
This is a swinging Latin date with lots of percussion punctuating the beat. Rudy knew how to makes vibes ring out (Bobby Hutcherson on Out to Lunch and his numerous other sessions) and Tjader gets the same treatment. Claire Fisher's piano and organ is the secret ingredient in this session that pulls it all together. This is a fun swinging album with lots of charm very well recorded.
