Exquisite interpretation, great natural sound
This is a moving performance of this symphony, beautifully played by Wiener Philharmoniker and Carl Schuricht. The sound is like being in a concert hall but clearer. A definite must for all Bruckner lovers!
Fine performance of Bruckner's greatest symphony in good sound
Schuricht's VPO Bruckner 8th has long been recognized as a classic and comes up very well in the HDTT remastering. Warmly recommended.
Schurucht's Bruckner Eight
Scurucht's Bruckner recordings have been in and out of the catalog in a variety of formats over the decades, but have never sounded better than in this release of the 8th. There is a real "presence" to the sound of the strings in particular that EMI CD releases never quite captured. Hopefully the 3rd and the 9th will appear as downloads on this site in the near future.
The historical performance!
The performance made the best through a lifetime of Carl Schuricht. Beauty of the adagio is impressive in particular. The mastering by HDTT is wonderful and also very excellent more than SACD by EMI.
High sound quality
Schuricht had been an important figure in post-war European musical life. One of those conductors who achieved reputation without showmanship. His Bruckner had its admirers but especially the 8th got some criticism not unjustly. His sometimes too driven tempi soon deprive the listener of Bruckner's mysticism already in the first movement. Still you can listen one of the finest symphony with a fine orchestra under a highly esteemed conductor in really excellent sound, just to mention the really "brave" brass section. One can be really involved by the music despite the above complaints.
