Bringing Steinberg's recorded legacy back to life is one of the very best things HDTT has done. This a typically taught and energetic performance of the symphony, and has surely never sounded better.
I had this recording on Command lp MANY years ago and somehow lost it. My fond memories proved correct: this is an excellent performance with great sound (especially with a sub-woofer). Very musical and with real sentiment (not sentimental). I have other recordings of the work and prefer this one.
I have had this Rachmaninov Symphony NO. 2 on LP for years and never liked it. The samples on HDTT’s website made me try to explore it again. After purchasing this HDTT transfer, it has become one of my favorite performances of this piece together with Previn(1973), Svetlanov (1968,1992), and Gauk (1956?). HDTT let me re-discovered many performances which I already dismissed – Steinberg’s Rachmaninov Symphony NO.2, Kondrashin’s Mahler Symphony NO.9, and George Szell’s Mahler symphony NO.6, to name a few. HDTT’s high definition transfer is a revelation. The extra details HDTT recovers in its sophisticated process make the conductor’s interpretation crystal clear. It brings many old recordings back to live. I’m looking forward to hearing more transfers from HDTT.
Another lovely remastering from HDTT.
