Fine Mahler from NYPO and Lennie
Bernstein's 1960's Mahler is quite different from the later DG recordings. Faster tempi and much of the passion of a younger man. Bernstein clearly has the measure of this demanding symphony. The HDTT sound is excellent. Recommended for all Mahlerites.
Bernstein's NY Mahler 6
Mahler's sixth symphony is now embraced by audiences in no small part due to the celebrity of this very performance, which has been a classic since its first issue. In this case HDTT is up against a high quality set of remasters issued by Sony, so perhaps this is a less essential upgrade than some others. For those who wish to hear this performance sound as well as it could conceivably sound, however, this HDTT version will not disappoint.
The "Non Plus Ultra"
Even there are minute flawlless in the sound, I prefer a transfer made like this one. No tricks to "clean" the original (it's not dirty, anyway) and hear the closest to the analogue recorded tapes. If there is a little hiss, you forget it right after the first bar sounds. And what bars! This IS Mahler and anything else is gaslight! Bernstein and the New Philarmonic do the very best of this terrific symphony. If you are seeking desperately THE version of this work, look no further: THIS is such version. Mahler, Bernstein and the NYPO in a sinergy simply perfect. As I entitled: "The Non Plus Ultra".
