Until this re-release I had nearly forgotten Ataulfo Argenta. I also had a mistaken impression that the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra was not always at its best. Thankfully, this recording of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto sets me right on both counts. Campoli has the fiddle technique and the fiery Romantic temperament to bring off his part. Argenta has the orchestra wide awake and delivering a tight musical ensemble. Gary Graffman with Szell/Cleveland has already been on my fav shelves for years now. This release / remastering however just has to be the best sound this master has received to date. I know that reviewers mention this aspects lots, but really it remains a consistent gain that HDTT strives to deliver. Having this all together is really great, since some things do get released on HDTT with much less overall playing time. Thanks for putting both concertos together in one single release with such impressive DSD sound. Whew! Although 13 years separate the two performances, the remastered DSD sound simply shows now wear, no degradations. These war horses are loose, out of the barn now, and we can ride fast and free on wonderful Tchaikovsky at home or on the go. Bravo, bravo, bravo ! (My apologies for posting this review on Argenta's Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique.) That DSD music file is a really welcome re-release and rematering, too !
I buy this one for the violin concerto, fabulous. Not a big fan of the piano concerto but transfert is solid again.
Very good, Thank you.
solid performances by soloists and a great orchestra and great conductor of two of romantic classical music's "anthems". eXcellent recording and transfer, too. 5 stars for getting good versions of two iconic pieces on a sonically eXcellent recording.
