Great quality, great music!
There's no doubt that when Bill Evans gets in the groove, the music that follows is both great and completely transporting. Sound quality is as good as I've heard - just a fantastic album!
Bill Evans Trio 64 review
PERFORMANCE: This is always interesting music played artistically and expertly across the board. Evans of course aces the piano lead, and Peacock on bass shows his talents when leading with fast runs formed in timed bursts each followed by a few seconds silence while energy builds back up for the next burst; good musical content is included in the bass playing within the virtuosity. Motian's drumming is eminently right and supportive of the music. SOUND QUALITY: The sonic recording of the bass is exemplary, with great detail, color and musical pace. The piano's recorded sound is limited in comparison with a midrange focused kind of sound reminiscent of how the piano sounds in many Vince Guaraldi recordings. You get the gist of the melody clearly, but little of the pianos rich sound. The drums sound fine but are often buried in the mix, with details sometimes lost. The excellent presentation of the bass tends to dominate the overall sonic landscape a bit. I get the impression that the transfer work by HDTT is exemplary as the qualities of the recording are clearly heard. My purchase was of the DSD128 download. SUMMARY: Despite the initially perceived sonic balances, I look forward to further listening as there is great music making going on here. Extended listening should reveal what treasures this recorded performance may yield, it seems so far like fertile soil for that to happen.
