Exceptional sound, as expected
This no doubt is a much more satisfying transfer than the Chesky CD (to which we all feel obliged for making this great performance widely available). I didn’t expected anything less from HDTT, anyhow, so no surprise. Mind that this performance will always challenge performances like Carlos Kleiber’s for top recommendation.
Highly recommended Brahms n°4
Really a Must Have! Reiner with the CSO at their best, and the sound is nothing but excellent
An excellent Brahms Recording
This recording of Brahms Symphony No. 4 is made extremely well, both the interpretation and the recording quality.
The best Brahms 4? Perhaps.
A very fine Brahms 4, certainly, from this unusual combination of the post- Beecham Royal Philharmonic and the great, ogre-like Fritz Reiner. Whatever the strange chemistry, it worked! Maybe the orchestra was terrified out of its collective skins Sonics - the 15ips tape was obviously in good condition. Combine that with a classic Gerhardt/Wilkie production in Walthamstow Town Hall for Readers Digest and you have the recipe for fine sonics. And the performance is just as cherishable. Not the one for you if you like your Brahms stodgy, mellifluous and boring, This one blows away the cobwebs, for sure; it's lithe, clear and propulsively energetic. Great playing and great conducting make this a great Brahms 4. Strongly recommended, therefore.
Reiner and Brahms
Extraordinary performance - don't miss this, especially not if you are a Reiner fan.
