Conductor Maurice Abravanel (1903-1995) and the cultural musical life of Utah became synonymous for many years, since the Greek-born maestro led the Utah Symphony from 1947-1979, raising its originally community status to that of international ensemble boasting one of the earliest complete recorded Mahler cycles. Raised in Lausanne, Switzerland in the same house of maestro Ernest Ansermet, Abravanel became a proficient pianist and score reader. In Germany, Abravanel studied with Kurt Weill, whom Abravanel claimed was " a terrible teacher" but who remained a powerful influence. Abravanel's exceptional talents eventually brought him to Tanglewood and to the Cleveland Institute of Music. Abravanel's style consistently communicates intense but sober musicality, clarity, and nobility of line.
Abravanel brings a decidedly dramatic and balletic touch to Rimsky-Korsakov's 1868 (rev. 1875; 1897) Antar Symphony (or Symphonic Suite), given Abravanel's association with George Balanchine in Paris, and Abravanel's innate love of exotic colors. The HDTT remastering allows Rimsky-Korsakov's natural effulgence to soar in a glowing orchestral palette; and the composer himself claimed that in this music he wished to emulate both Beethoven and Berlioz. The Utah winds, brass, and battery achieve spectacular heights in this sensational performance!
No less compelling are Ippolitov-Ivanov's four Caucasian Sketches, Suite No. 1, Op. 10 (1894), based on tunes he collected around the Caucasus Mountains. In a Mountain Pass sings majestically. In a Village opens with a muezzin call and indulges in a sensuous dance for the Utah winds section. In a Mosque likewise effects the muezzin's call to prayer and proceeds in darkly dramatic figures for winds. The final piece is Procession of the Sardar, a Persian military dignitary whose pomp and ceremony Abravanel captures to perfection.
Reinhold Gliere's popular Russian Sailors' Dance from The Red Poppy--Ballet, Op. 70 (1927) achieves a magical sonority under Abravanel, who plays the piece for its exemplary brass and percussion parts, a real tour de force for a virtuoso orchestra!
